As nobody attempted to guess the first theme I posted here, even after all my clues, I will tell you that it was..........
............. 'The Singing Ringing Tree' - part of the 'Tales from Europe' series first transmitted on the BBC in the 60s and again in the 70s. It was arguably the most scary piece of fantasy aimed at children and is probably responsible for more than one disturbed childhood - judge for yourself here.
